Shag Dancing

Shag dancing, a swing dance that began in the 1940s in the Carolinas, has two main styles:

  • Carolina Shag: The more popular style, known for smooth footwork and relaxed rhythm, danced to fast blues or swing music, reflecting coastal Carolina culture.
  • Collegiate Shag: A faster, more energetic version with quick footwork, often danced to upbeat jazz or swing in college towns.

Both styles focus on rhythm and improvisation, with Carolina Shag remaining a cultural tradition in the region.

Po' Boys

A ‘po' boy’ is a classic sandwich made with crusty French bread, typically filled with fried seafood, fried chicken, or roast beef, and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and a tangy mayo or sauce.

The name "Po' boy" originated in the 1920s when brothers Benny and Clovis Martin of New Orleans created the sandwich to feed striking streetcar workers, who were called "poor boys."
